inspiration from a cinnamon roll

here’s a blog entry for you:
so i went into the bakery, looking for an idea to blog about… i asked kyrsten at the counter if she had anything clever to say but all she did was grumble something about it not being appropriate to publish on the internets. carly in the bakery thought i could post something about the gossip at saint cupcake, but we don’t really have any. at least no one tells me any. (but carly DID just get engaged! to be married! that’s exciting! congrats, carly-n-justin!) so i looked to the cupcakes in the case for inspiration.
"what’s new, cupcakes?" i asked.
no answer.
"hmph," i say. that’s when the cinnamon rolls called to me.
"what are we, chopped liver?"
they asked in unison.
"no, it’s just that..i thought that...but it’s.." i didn’t know WHAT to say. how do you tell a cinnamon roll that the name of the shop makes no mention of their species of baked good? it became clear to me that these crispy spirals feel neglected and forgotten. so for the sake of the blog, i took one. you know, for work
"how long have you guys been sitting out here?" i asked the rolls.
defensively, and trying to elicit sympathy, one pastry said, "like ALL morning."
it was only 9:18am. we’d opened at 9 and had only had a handful of customers - apparently no one had yet eyed the cinnamon rolls.
"do you feel like you get the shaft because of cupcakes?" the cinnamon roll nodded. i took the chosen one back to my desk, had a seat and took a piece from the bottom. it was the part of the cinnamon roll where the buttery goodness melted and cooled and settled into cinnamonny sugar clumps. when i bit down, it made a soft sound like footsteps on frozen snow. it tasted like heaven. yeah, if heaven tastes warm, doughy and has just the right contrast of sweet and biscuity.
having grown up a redheaded stepchild myself, i knew just how these cinnamon rolls must have felt sitting there atop a case of cupcakes.
so my friends, today’s message is about remembering the little guy. we have all been guilty of forgetting about what is important sometimes. and believe me, cinnamon rolls are very important.
come by and have one today.
