our phones are fixed! our phones are fixed!

did you know that an electrician is a better person to call than the actual phone company when your phones are dead? it’s true! now that we are so much smarter about phones, we thought we’d share this precious info with you, bloggy readers.
speaking of electricians, has anyone out there seen ray bradbury’s electric grandmother? we had a big discussion about bionic hands today and the electric g-ma came up. she could fill a glass with orange juice by squirting it out of her electric finger. amazing and gross.
bottom line: an electrician fixed our phone problem and we heart him.
our flipping phone is down! our flipping phone is down!

oh, and if you are a phonetician we’d love to hear from you. if you are just someone that wants to talk cupcakes, we still want to hear your thoughts and questions. you just go ahead and shoot me an email at .
awesome! and sorry for the inconvenience.
ellery’s super secret banana bread recipe
POSTED ON Tuesday, July 08, 2008 AT 13:29 by saint cupcake
the other day while sitting at the kitchen table with a bag of brown sugar, ellery, (age 2 3/4) announced she needed more ingredients to make some banana bread. i asked her what those ingredients were. three items in, i realized it needed to be documented and shared with other baking enthusiasts. here is what she said:
sugar
brown sugar
cookie nuggets
flour (but she very well could have meant flower)
chocolate chips
pot
and sugar
then there was this conversation:
me: is there ANYthing else you think should go in your banana bread?
she: no
me: are you sure?
she:um…
me: in your BANANA bread? anything banana-y maybe?
she:bananas
me:oh great!
then i asked her how you make it:
first you mix it up
put on your apron
you just pour it
you get some chocolate chips
and you put on your apron again
and then that’s it; you can eat it.
viola and presto, a delicious apparent “no-bake” recipe for banana bread! i dare you to try it.
and when ellery said “pot” she just left the article off. we hope.

saint cupcake made the headlines yesterday, practically.
after one of our neighbors on belmont was ‘vandalized’ with removable stenciled boards of dr. martin luther king’s head, a reporter from the oregonian set out to actually find the entrance to the dixie mattress company. she did and she wrote about it. and us.
thanks the oregonian, for the shout out. we heard it loud and clear! reading the words “cupcake store” in the dixie mattress store confederate flag article (see 3rd paragraph on page 2), we know what you meant was that saint cupcake brings peace and tolerance everywhere. oh, the oregonian, we love you, too.
hey, and speaking of flags and freedom and first amendment rights, this friday is the 4th of july! holy hot dog, the summer is practically over! just so you know, saint cupcake will be closed on friday so we can all stuff as much potato salad into ourselves as possible. it’s just the american thing to do. as a special all american treat, we’ll have red velvets available on thursday (white icing, blue sprinkles). big tops will feature red, white and/or blue icing, and all cupcakes (except vegan) will have red, white and blue sprinkles. FREEDOM CAKES!
the affect of a cupcake

when i tell people that i am the director of cupcake affairs for saint cupcake, (yeah, that’s my real title. i even have a business card) they’ll tell me things like “ohmygawd! i’d eat those cupcakes everyDAY if i worked there!” like it’s a bad thing. i won’t lie to you and say i hardly touch the stuff; i touch those cupcakes a lot. more than i let my almost three year old know i do, anyway. i am not saying this because i work here but dang, jami’s cream cheese icing recipe is crazy good. like makes you feel some sort of emotion that falls between tender love and blind rage kind of good. one time, many years ago for my birthday jami baked me these heart shaped shortbread sandwich cookies with a caramel center and they LITERALLY brought tears to my eyes. i even did a chuck norris side kick and offered to punch someone on jami’s behalf, if she wished. she never took me up on that (not yet) but jami did surprise me from time to time with a cute little cellophane bag tied with a ribbon and filled with cookies she then named “ jendicotts”.
although the calorie count of our cupcakes are not known we can assume that they are higher than a stalk of celery but less than a big mac. who cares? i say! i’m pretty sure they are good for your heart and i believe that they can make you a better person. for example, i rode my bike to work the other day. know why? i think the cupcakes made me do it. gas prices helped me decide this, too. of course i had to plan it for a week, go find a cute helmet and tell everyone i knew that i was going to ride my bike to work so i’d actually follow through with it. i sure felt like a bad ass riding through the side streets of north east portland. “i am a bike commuter,” i told myself. i actually hadn’t been much of one since 5th grade but this is the new me! a spaz on wheels! look out, other bikers; now there’s a new kid you have to pass huffing in the bike lane. thanks to those cupcakes, there was one less car on the road.
there was also one more bike and rider on the max on my way home. with 50 blocks to go, i gave into my inner demon telling me to stop peddling and get on that train. is it just me or is the eastside all uphill?
and since i was able to work off at least some cupcake on my commute, i am going to go have one now. i think i’ll have toasted coconut. i can’t be responsible for my reaction to it, though. i may kick out a window or adopt someone, who knows?
what will cupcakes make you do?
